The kinetic and statistical explanations of the second law of thernuodynattaics is exarnined inthe region of extended irreversible then'znodynataaics. Tl?e thertnodynarnical entropy is identifiedwith the entropy obtained by the maxitaauzaa entr'opy procedttre with constraints. The differentialof the thertnodynarnical entropy is exact in flue Giblcs space of' fvtndarauental variables. It isslaoxvn that irreversibility in znesoscopic levels is necessary bttt not sufficient f'or the entropy toincrestse. Here, irreversibility is expressed in ternas of the Boltzmann equation or in tertns of'tlae IVIarkovian rnaster eqtration of tlae dynautaical seumi-group tlueory. The difl'erence loetween thef-theorezn and tl'xe second law is clearly demonstrated in the extevaded Gibbs space. In addition, the relative entropy is considered as an entity to connect tlae f-theoretaa with the second law.
