The effects of arornatic amino acid residtres L1pOIl the spectral shift of r'etinal proteins are inves-tigated by perturbation calctrlations. The calcvxlated results indicate that phenylalanine, tyrosineand tryptophan can contribute to the opsin shift rrraximally by several hundred xvavenurnbers. The results also indicate that the sign and magnitude of the shifts caused by these aronaaticanaino acid residues depend on muttral configtnrations between the residues and the retinal. Thephenylalanine residtre located nearr the iozaone ring indtrces bathochromic or hypsochrornic shiftsif the aromatic plane is parallel or vertical to the retinal plane, respectively; the residue locatednear the Schi[T-base indtrces hypsochromic or bathochrotnic shifts if the arotnatic plane is parallelor vertical to the retinal plane, respectively. The calcttlated restmlts can explain the experinaentalresults for mvxtagenesis pigments.
