Peristaltic flow in a two-dimensional channel with a sinusoidal wave is analyzed. Under theassumption of creeping motion, the problem is formulated using a perturbation expansion interms of a variant of the Weissenberg number. To determine the characteristics of the peristalticmotion of shear thinning non-Newtonian fluids, the motion of a Carreau fluid in a planar channelhaving walls that are transversely displaced by an infinite, harmonic traveling wave of largewavelength and neglecting wave nurnber. We f'ound the pumping rate of a Carreau fluid is lessthan that for a Newtonian having a shear viscosity the sarne as zero-shear-rate viscosity of thenon-Newtonian fluid. The peristaltic pumping and the atrgmented pumping are discussed forvarious values of the physical pararneters of interest.
