Taking gravity wave train as an example, the effect of gentle and weak inhomogeneity on nonlinear steady waves governed by the nonlinear Schr6dinger equation inhounogeneous media is investigated. let is SIIOWII that this kind of uznhomogetteitycauses deforntation but neitlter dampirtg nor amplification of such waves during pro-pagationt, which presents a striking conl rast to tlte case of fixtite inhomogeneity; for in-stance, tl?e case of finite variation of the water layer deptlt. Further it is shown that,when the inlaonnogeneity is stochastic, the center of mass of the nonline;tr steady waveperforms a random walk and their averaged amplitudes diffuse algebraically and, onthe other hand, that the averaged carrier waves diffuse exponentially even due tomuch weaker inhomogeneity.
