Particle trajectories in the wave frame are expressed in an integral form whichelucidates the roles of the applied electrostatic wave field and of the induced t'. X Bfield. Both the non-relativistic and relativistic cases are treated. In each case, theenergy integral is shown to exist and a criterion for transition from trapping to detrap-ping is obtained, and thereby the optimum value of energy gain is deduced. It isshown that, when the E X B velocity, v., due to the wave field in the wave frame is lessthan the light speed, the Lorents factor of an accelerated particle, y(v), is almostlimited by y.=(1 -v;/c') "', while for v.>c, y(r) possibly increases linearly withtime.
