Quantum Monte Carlo study of the Hubbard model on a square lattice in theground state is reported. For the on-site interaction U=4 scaled by the transfer, thecharge excitation gap at the half-filling is estimated to be A.= 0.58 f 0.08. Near halffilling, the charge compressibility tc follows the form zcc( c>for the doping concentration J, indicating a divergent behavior as the system approaches half-filling, whiletc=O at the half-filling, The incommensurate spin correlation length 4 scales as4 CX: l / .?' J .
