The concept of sublattice strain is for tlae first time introduced using a simple two-subNattice model. Ferridistorlive crystals are defined as crystals whose spontaneousstrains consist of two kinds of sublattice strains with opposite signs and differentmagnitudes. Ferrielastics are defi?ted as ferridistortive crystals in which the sign ofone of the sublattice strains can be reversed by external stresses, and a triple hysteresisloop can be observed in a stress-strain curve, just as in the case of ferrielectric crystala triple hysteresis loop is observed in an electric field-polarization curve. It is sug-gested by using the two-sublattice model that ferrielastics are in fact possible undercertain conditions.[sublattice strain, ferrielastics, ferridistortive crystal, I'erroelastics, spontaneous ll strain, triple hysteresis loopl
