An upper bound for the survival probability of infected region 0,/.2(./4), (ICZ'),is presented for the contact process. The bound depends not only on the cardinalitynumber l A l but also on the number of neighboring pairs of sites in A. It may corres-pond to Krinsky's bound using the Bethe approximation for the Ising models. Thepresent result can be viewed as a generalization of Griffeath's bound for an orderparameter 7>..,(:a.,({,v})) in the one-dimensional system to the survival pro-babilities for all A in arbitrary dimensions.[contact process, critical value, survival probability, upper bounds, coalescing lJ dual process, interacting particle systems[
