We study the two-impurity Anderson model by the exact diagonalization method insmall systems and the variational method. With varying of the exchange coupling J be-tween two impurities, we evaluate the staggered susceptibility z, to investigate thecompetition between the Kondo effect and the RKKY interaction effect. The staggeredsusceptibility in our calculations shows no anomalous behavior in contrast to the re-cent numerical renormalization group calculations. In order to study this further, weintroduce the even-parity-mixing Anderson model. This model appears to showsingularities in z. and the ground-state energy at a point J=J.. We show that at thispoint, the ground state changes suddenly; the localized spins form a triplet for J< J.and a singlet for J>J.. In the original two-impurity Anderson model, a crossover oc-curs around J. without singularity.
