Temperature dependence of lifetimes r. (fast component) and r. (slow component)of the 7[ emission in Kl and KBr has been measured precisely to investigate the decaykinetics of zero-field-split triplet sub-levels A. and B. of the self-trapped excitons.Spin-lattice relaxation rates W.. and W.. between the A. and the B. levels are deter-mined directly from the observed values of r. and r. at various temperatures. In Kl,the upward transition rate W.. was found to decrease while the downward one W..approaches to a constant value in lowering temperature. On the other hand, both theupward and the downward ones in KBr decreases in lowering temperature. It is con-cluded that the one-phonon direct process is effective in Kl, whereas a multi-phononprocess is effective in KBr.self-trapped exciton, triplet state, lifetime, decay kinetics, spin-lattice relaxation
