The gradient of the edge electron temperature during a tokamak H-mode andparameter dependences of the threshold peripheral electron temperature aremeasured by the electron cyclotron emission (ECE). A steep gradient characterizesthe H-mode and the threshold temperature is dependent on the plasma current. Thesecond H-mode transition is observed, which is characterized by further depression ofthe intensity of deuterium line, and steeper gradient at the edge. A simple estimationusing the measured gradient gives an improvement of the electron heat diffusivity atthe pedestal. Some problems are discussed by comparing the measured results withthe existing H-mode theories.[pedesta1, H-mode, JFT-2M tokamak, electron cyclotron emission, electron heat l] diffusivityl
