X-Ray Diffraction Study of the Metastable Phase of Potassium Cyanide

• By X-ray precession photographic study, triclinic and monoclinic forms werefound in the metastable phase of KCN crystal at temperatures hetween 165 and 158K. These forms are mutually related with specific crystallographic orientation to thecubic lattice which is stable above 165 K. The triclinic form is a superlattice structurealong the a. axis with a period of twice as much as the (110) spacing of cubic lattice,and the lattice constants are a.=9.34(l), #.=4.43(1), c.=4.56(1) A, cc=121.15(10)',/7=l18.53(10)' and 7=90.00(10)' at 163 K. The lattice constants of the monoclinicform were a.=4.61(1), Z>.=4.58(l), c.=7.58(1)A and /7=122.27(4)' at 163K.Crystallographic relationships between these forms and the cubic lattice arepresented.
