Anomaly in Temperature Dependence of ^<59>Co NMR Frequency in HCP Co

The "Co NMR from magnetic domains in a hcp cobalt metal was studied using asingle crystal by the steady-state method over a temperature range of 4.2-516 K inzero external magnetic field. The resonance frequency v. of the central line of thequadrupole-split NMR spectrum at temperature T was measured as a function of T.v... was determined to be 219.781::0.03 MHz in good agreement with the previousresult. The reduced frequency (v... -v.)/v... was compared with the reducedmagnetization (M... -M.)/M... Both were found to agree well below about 60 K, butto show a marked discrepancy above this temperaure, suggesting an anomaly at about60 K in the magnetic state of cobalt metal. Below 40 K, the temperature dependenceof (v... - v.) / v..z was analysed based on a simple spin-wave theory. The analysis yieldsthe spin-wave stiffness constant D = 337 :l: 14 rneV A' which is much smaller than thatderived from neutron scattering.
