Determination of Elastic Constants of BiI_3 and SbI_3 Layered Crystals by Means of Brillouin Scattering

The elastic constants of Bil, and Sb13 are determined by Brillouin scattering.It is found that the phase velocity of phonons propagating in an angle y to theZ-axis is different from that propagating in an angle 180' -y for rhombohedralcrystals. The elastic constants determined in units of 10" dyne/cm' are Cz.=2.9, C12:0.50, Cz3:0.90, lCI4l:0.20, lC25l:0, C33::2.6 a??d Cg.zO.7O at 83 Kfor BiI3,and C..=1.5, C..=-0.50, C.3=0.40, lC14l=0.10, ?C.,?=0.25, C..=0.93 and C..=0.47 at room temperature for Sbl,. Bil. and Sbl. show very lowelastic anisotropy compared with other layered crystals. The phonon dispersioncurves calculated by a one-dimensional chain model does not show a satisifactoryagreement with the dispersion obtained from the present work.
