Collision cross sections for rotational excitation processes of a molecular nitrogenby electron impact are calculated at the energy range of 0.01 to 3 eV. It is shown thatintegrated cross sections for rotationally inelastic scattering are noticeably enhancedby the short range interaction between the scattered electron and the target nitrogenmolecule at the impact energy as low as 0.08 eV.At the energy region of the well-known II. resonance, it is confirmed that the crosssection for the rotational excitation of j = 0 to j' = 4 becomes larger than that for j = 0to j'=2 by more than the ratio of statistical weight (27'-l-1) of the final rotationalstate j' . An explanation to this fact is given by analysing the expression of the in-tegrated cross section.
