The charge distributions in protein tertiary structures a?'e classified accordingto the types of their electric multipoles. The observed types of the multipolestructures due to only partial atomic charges correlate well with the tertiaryfolding patterns of the backbones. The multipole structures due to only ionizedside chains are found to have almost reversed features of those due to only atomiccharges, as stated by the plus-minus charge compensation principle proposed inour accompanying paper.
