The motion of fluid particles in shear flows perturbed by unamplifying travelingsinusoidal waves is considered. The analogy between the formulation of theproblem in terms of the stream function and the Hamiltonian dynamics is pointedout. An exact analytical solution is obtained for a perturbed mixing-layer typeflow. For a perturbed wake type flow, an approximate analytical solution isobtained by employing the method of canonical transformation due to Hori.
