The propagation matrix method is applied to atomn diffractic>n at solid surfaces. The basic equations for describirrg atom diffraction become the simultaneous lineardifferential equations for the propagation matrix. The diffraction intensity isexpressed in terms of the prc>pagation matrix. This method is applied to thecalculation of intensity versus i?tcident angle curves for the diffraction of heliumbeams from the lithium fluoride (001) plane. It is found that 1.he unitarity of thescattering matrix is satisfied very well. Furthermore the dependence of the dif-fraction intensity on the sturface lattice vibrations is investigated.
