Percolative Conduction in Biological Conductor:Cytochrome c_3 Anhydrous Film of Desulfovibrio vulgaris,Miyazaki Strain

Electrical conductivity of the thin film of cytoclu'ome c., electron carrier proteinof anaerobic bacteria, was measured as a function of ferri- to ferro-ratio. At theinitial reduction stage of ferric cytoclu'ome c., the conductivity was graduallyincreased and was explained by doping effect. This was the first observation ofdoping effect for biological molecules. At 0.95 ferro-ratio, the conductivity wasabruptly increased. The observation was analysed by the percolation theory whichpredicts that there is very strong heme-heme interaction between fully reducedcytochrome c. molecules in a condensed phase.The anomalous physico-chemical behaviors of ferrocytoclu'ome c3 film such asvery low ionization potential and intermolecular heme-heme interaction observedby M6ssbauer spectroscopy were also discussed in relation to the present results.
