Optical and X-ray examinations of CsHSe0. were made above and below thephase transition point (7'.). CsHSe0. undergoes an improper ferroelastic phasetransition at I28'C and has spontaneous strains e'j.=2.7 x 10 ' and (e'4. -e'jg)/27.9 x 10 ' at room temperature. The crystal is tetragonal above T. with theunit cell parameters a.=b.=4.1S A and c.=7.2O A at 130'C, and exhibits a super-lattice structure with the monoclinic unit cell parameters a..'::2a. and b..z2b.below T.. It is shown that if we assume 4/mmm as the point group above T., allthe domain structures observed in CsHSe0. below T., which disappear above T.,can be deduced from the strain-compatibility relations for domain boundariesby taking account of the symmetry change from 4/mmm to 2/m associated withthe phase transition.
