The direct transition from the 7-phase to the a-phase in Cul, the superionictransition, is studied in terms of the dependence of 1,he free energy on the orderparameter and temperature. The average structure of the a-phase is expressed by amicrocrystalline model to take into account the Cu" -Cu" Coulomb correlation. Theformation energy of microcrystals is expressed as the surface energy, and calculatedfrom the interionic interaction, which consists of Vashishta-Rahman's potential andnearest neighbour covalent bond. Anharmonic vibration of Cu" is described byEinstein model with cubic anharrnonicity. The transition entropy comes from theconfiguration of microcrystals and increase of thermal vibration of Cu" on a micro-crystal surface. The calculated transition entropy and energy per ton pair are 1.4 kg and0.1 1 eV, respectively, which are close to the observed values.
