A nonlinear theory is presented which SIIOWS naode-locki?ag of a naturallyexcited i?astability by an externaally lauuached wave vv'hose frequency is arouuad tltatof tlae instability. A procedure to remove secular solutions leads to a coupie oftaonlinear equations which describe slow-time evolutions of amplitudes. A stablystationary solution of these equatiouas is investigatec[ to show qualitative agreementwith published experiments; the external field strength at which the instabilityvanishes increases as the frequency discrepancy lr?etween the instability auad theexternal wave ?f2-oc.j increases, and a relatio?a Aa"4Bb'=1 is obtained betweenthe amplitude of the instability a and that of the e>cternally excited wave b wl'nercthe ratio B/A depends on the frequency discrepan<:y in the form (Q-a(,)-"
