Semiconductiuag WO. with the donor eJectrot?s trapped in oxygen vacanciesshows so-called 'semieomaductor-metal transition' s.t the tricliuaic-monocliuaic (I)phase transition temperature at about 17'C. Resistivity discontinuities as largeas a factor 10" have beeua observed at the monoclinic: ([1)-triclinic phase transitionat about -40'C.The semiconductor-metal transition is interpret<:d by the consideration thatthe energy gap between the t., orbitals of 5d" conduction electrons axad the donorlevel are enlarged by the crystalline distortions duc: to the condensations of thesoft phonon modes. The resistivity discontinuities are interpreted as due to thediffereuat energy gaps in the monaoclinic (II) and tric[inic phases.The essential difference between WO. and Red. having the sanae crystalstructure is discussed.
