The steady motion of a flexible solid parti<xle in a quienscent unboundedviscous fluid is investigated theoretically. It is assumed that the particle is ahomogeneous, isotropic elastic body obeying E[ooke's law and that the unde-formed particle is spherical in shape. It is furtlter assumed that the motion offluid obeys the Stokes equation. It is shown that f'or small values of the parameterct=qU./67?., where q is the shear viscosity of flv?id, G the shear modulus of theparticle and U. the terminal settling velocity of a .c'igid particle whose raditxs is 7?.,the particle deforms into a prolate spheroid artd the deviation from a sphereis in proportion to cx". The effect of the deforrnation on the terminal settlingvelocity of the particle is also included in the ana.lysis.
