The frequency and Iinewidth of the four Raman active modes in anatase havebeen investigated over the temperature range 20 to 1100 K. The tetmperature (7')dependence of the frequency of the 639 cm-' mode showed typic;nl behavior innortnal ionic crystals, whereas the other modes at 399, 197 and 144 cm ' didanomalous behavior. These T<lependent results were combined with pressuredependent results, thermal expansion and compressibility data tc>evaluate thepure-volume and pure-temperature contributions to the T depen<lance of eachfrequency. The results indicate tlaat the anomalous T dependence of' the 399 cm-'mode reflects the near cancellation of the cubic and quartic co?cxtributions tothe frequency shift, and that of the modes.at 197 and 144 cm- ' arisa:s from s1.rongquartic contributions. The T dependence of the Iinewidth is well explained qualita-tively in terms of simple anharmonic effects involving three phormon processes.
