Spin-Lattice Relaxation of Co^<+2> Ions in Zinc Formate Dihydrate

The Co" tons at two different sites in Zn(II000). ' 2H.0 have been studiedin their ESR at about 9.37 GHz and between L.6 and 50 K. The temperaturedependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time deduced from the line: widthdepends on the site and can be well explained by' the Orbach type process, if theenergy differezace A, between the ground and th<>first excited Kramers doublet,is 89 and 160 cm ', respectively. A theoretical calculation based on thei?' aniso-tropic ,(-tensors gives 140 and 215 cm-', if 2= - 120 crn ' is assumed.
