Experimental Study of Conduction Band Structure of Some n-Alkanes and Polyethylene by Means of Low Energy Electron Scattering and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

• Secondary electron omission (SEE) measurernent was used to investigate theconduction band structures of n-C..H 5 ., n-C.,H.., n-C..H 9. and polyethylene,and ultraviolct photoelectron spectra of n-C..H5. and n-C35H.. were measured.Several structures, whose kinetic energy positions were independent of theenergies of incident sources, were observed in ttte both spectra. It was found thatSEE spectra of all compounds were almost sinuilar with each other, and corre-sponded well with the photoelectron spectra. Tlxese structures are ascribed to thehigh density-?of-states parts of the conduction ttand which do not depend on thechain length. The spectra were compared with the energy distribution curve ofsecondary electrons estimated by the use of XPS result for the valence band andtheoretical result for the conduction band of isc?1ated chain. The energy .positionsof the structttres of the estimated curve agree f'airly well with those of observedspectrum.
