A new interpretation is presented for the ?smectic A-smectic C. transition ofliquid crystals in terms of the topological order proposed by Kosterlitz andThouless. It is suggested that in the smectic C phase some kinds of point singu-larities cannot exist individually but in pairs, while in the smectic A phase theymove rather independently because of the dissociation of the pairs. The reasonablevalue of the critical temperature is obtained.
