Absorption spectra of Na[Br: Cu" have been irtvestigatccd over the pressurerange from l bar to about 6 kbar at a low temperature. Tltere occurs a criticalpressure-induced local phase transition (off-center to can-center transition),accompanying appearance of new absorption. baxnds on the lower energy side ofthe known absorption bands. The above pressure-induced absorption bands areassigned to the A band (spin.-forbidden transition) and thc; B band in order ofincreasing photon energy, refering to the absorj>lion spectrum of an on-centersystem, Nail : Cu'. The origin of the off-center is discussed in connection withthe pressure effects.
