A dynamical theory is presented for the helix-coil transition and the isotopeexchange reaction in a short polypeptide chain. In this theory it is assumed thatthere is always one and only one helical sequence. The boundaries of the helixare assumed to move randomly along the chain. If we assume slow movement ofthe boundaries, our model theory explains the experimental results, i.e., thevery low rate of the isotope exchange in the central portion of the chain and thesite dependence of the rate.
