Molecular Field Theory of Magnetization in Rare Earth Orthochromites and Orthoferrites : Application to GdCrO_3

Molecular field eq uations for F., T.,z and F 2 phases of rare earth orthochr'omitesand orthoferrites are derived and applied to the analysis of the observed magneti-zation in GdCr0.. The Cr-Cr, Cr-Gd and Gd-Gd interactions are determinedso as to fit the observed magnetization. The free energy is calculated by usingthese values of the parameters. It is shown that the single-ion anisotropy of theGd" ion and the Gd"-Gd" interaction contribute to the magnetization below10 K and to the free energy below 3 K, while the Cr"-Gd" antisymntetricexchange intteraction stabilizes the free enet'gy below 10 K.
