Positron lifetime spectra were measured at 20'C in Gd-doped Basic. whichcontained a large amount of Ba" vacancies. It was found that the intensity oflong-lived (r.) component was proportional to the nominal vacancy concentratuonand the averaged annihilation rate decreased as the concentration increased. Toexplain the o bserved results a model is proposed in which most of Ba" vacanciesform pairs with Gd" and these pairs attract, but do not trap positrons, andisolated Ba" vacancies trap positrons giving o. component.
