The M6ssbauer technique has been applied to the reverse nnartensitic transfor-mation in an Fe-I8.6% Mn alloy. The Debye-Waller factor and the center shiftshow anomalous decrease prior to and during the hcp+fcc transformation. Theorigin of the observed anomalies and the mechanism of the transformation arediscussed in the light of the electronic and lattice instability.
