Surface Layer Effects on the Dielectric Behaviour of Polycrystalline Ammonium Tetra Fluoberyllate

The dielectric constant of compressed powder of (NH.).BeF. has been meas-ured at l MHz as a function of temperature for different particle sizes rangingfrom 105 /Z[]1 to 710 /ZITI over a wide range of temperature to cover ferro- andpara-electric phases. Dielectric anomaly at -9'7'C indicates the ferroelectricbehaviour. It is found that the dielectric constant corrected for porosity decreaseswith decreasing particle size. The measurea dielectric constant ror the biggestparticle size is lower than the theoretically predicted value for a polycrystallinesample. Such behaviour can be explained by postulating a defective surface layerof thickness 50 /ZITI with dielectric constant 15.
