Spatial Distribution of Excited Molecules Induced by Proton Beam in Nitrogen Gas

Spatial intensity distributions of spectral bands are obtained by 100 and 150keV proton impact on molecular nitrogen gas target. All bands of the N2 secondpositive system (C'7l#.->B'N.) show broad distributions, while those of the Nffirst negative system (B'J."+X'J.F) show confined ones. Pressure dependenceof the relative emission cross sections can be expressed as P". As for 3914 A (0, 0)band of the Nf first negative, a is equal to 0 for the beam path region and O.23x0.29 for outside region of the beam. On the other hand, for 3371 A (0, 0) bandof the N. second positive, ox is equal to 1 over all region. The spatial distributionof the production rate of the state C'77. of N. by secondary electrons is calculated.Fairly good agreement between calculated and observed lateral distributions of3371 A is obtained in the region outside the beam axis.
