Hanle effect studies using circularly polarized laser beam and linearly polarizedlaser beam were carried out. Lifetimes, orientation and alignment destructioncross sections were measured for the 5d.., 6p.. and 6p.. excited levels of xenon. The observed ratio of orientational cross section to alignrnernt cross section forXe-Xe scatterin: was 1.1 g.o.+ for the 5733 level, and 0.55 fl 0.2 for the 671722 level. The ratio for Xe-He scattering was 0.8jO.2 for the 5d.3 level and 0.6f0.2 forthe 6p.. level. They are cont)vared with those calculated by Wang and Tomlinson. The observed radiative Iifetllme was 520#30 ns for the 5t,/ae level, 35 -l-2 ns forthe 6p.. level and 37 f4 ns for the 67>g. level. The decay rate of the 5d.. levelobserved in the coherence transfer with spontarueous emission is consistent withthe width of the Mania signal.
