The Ising model with a trarnsverse field has been investigated for both positiveand negative exchange interactions. Effective Hamiltonians a-re used for a pair ofnearest-neighbour spins. The transition temperatture and susceptibility above thetransition temperature are calculated. The critic;tl magnitude of the transversefield for which the transition temperature becom<:s 0 K is also evaluated. Whenthe transverse field is absent, the result of the present method is reduced to thatof the Bethe approximation.
