Exciton Absorption Lines in Antiferromagnetic YCrO_3

Spectral change of the exciton absorption lines in YCr03 observed duringthe field-induced spin reorientation (SR) is investigated. The energy shift of thecenter of gravity of the four exciton lines during the SR is calculated. It is shownthat the change of the spin=?orbit coupling eneergy during the SR plays an impor-tant role in the energy shift. The change of the observed total intensities of theexciton lines in each polarization in the whole range of the SR is calculated bytaking into account the tilting of the Cr05 octahedron from the undistortedperovskite structure. The result is in fair agreement with experiments. Finallythe energy transfer matrix elements are determined from the moments of theobserved energies and intensities by choosing appropriately the phases of thebasic wavefunctions.
