A new expression for semi-empirical non-Lorentzian line shape has beenobtained. The absorptances in NH3-H., HCI -CO. and NO-NO collisions arebetter represented by a line shape varying as ?v -N'.l-" w'ith t7=1.6 at fx'eqtuenciesgreater than xl cm-' from the line center. For CO. lines, however, the Lorent-zian shape seenas to be valid within a large frequency interval from the line center.A ntethod for deter?nining the strengths and widths of non-Lorentzian lines frontthe equivalent width data is discussed. This ntethod has been applied to therotational lines of CO.
