The extension to two dimensions of the reductive perturbation method developed by Taniuti et al. is first discussed and then applied to the problem of electromagnetic waves propagating in a cold electronic plasma bounded by two conducting planes. The behaviour of the amplitude modulation is found to be governed by a nonlinear Schrodinger equation, from which the stability of the wave can be determined in some limiting cases.
