The thermal diffusion factor, α_T, of the systems Ne-CH_3Cl and Ar-CH_3Cl, have been studied by the two-bulb method as functions of temperature and composition. The α_T vs temperature curves for both the systems show natures which cannot be explained qualitatively by the elastic theory using the generally accepted values of the force parameters and the Lennard-Jones type of potentials. The force parameters obtained by fitting the temperature dependence of α_T data fail to represent the composition dependence of α_T for both the systems. The inelastic theory of Monchick et al. for α_T shows partial success for the systems under consideration. It is concluded that most probably a better representation of intermolecular potential than the Lennard-Jones type of potentials and consideration of inelastic collisions are necessary to explain the α_T data for the systems.
