The effect of absorption, as defined by a finite mean free path for the primary electron beam, is discussed in terms of the optical potential. The additional dispersion is found to be important in self consistent calculation of the damping in regions where the absorption is dependent on the magnitude of the wavevector, or where the diffracted plane were travels nearly parallel to the surface such as in surface state resonances.
