A theoretical interpretation is given for the lines in the excitation spectrum exhibited by interstitial lithium in germanium by calculating the ground state energies for the two possible interstitial positions for lithium (T_d and D_<3d>). This interpretation leads to the conclusion that the site symmetry of lithium in germanium is T_d, and the ground state is an "inverted" Group-V-like one with a very small chemical splitting. The ionization energy of the lowest ground state (1s(T_1)) is 9.35 meV, lying 0.15 meV below the upper ground state (1s(A_1)). The corresponding observed values are 9.89 meV and about 0.2 meV, respectively. Experiments to check the conclusion are suggested.
