The behavior of periphery magnetic field lines in the standard Large Helical Device(/ = 2 heliotron / torsatron type) configuration is studied numerically. Three differenttypes of behavior are found, cxorresponding to three different regions: the stochasticregion near the outermost magnetic surface, the whisker region, and the infer-whiskerregion outside the stochastic region. The behavior of whisker and inter-whisker fieldlines is specifically analyzed. It is found that whisl<er field lines exhibit both regularand irregular types of behavior, whereas inter-whisker field lines exhibit only regularbehavior. The connection lengths for the whisker field lines are usually as long asseveral tens of toroidal pitches, whereas those for tlte infer-whisker field lines are usu-ally less than ten toroidal pitch lengths. Whisker field lines are characterized by threefundamental processes: stretclning, folding, and nesting associated with the motion ofa residual X-point of the separatrix. Simple modelimtg is perforrned to reproduce thesethree fundamental processes.[LHD, periphery, whisker field line, connection length, divertor, residual X- ]l point, mapping modell
