The stability of equilibrium configurations of nematics in two concentric cylindersis examined by considering the change of free energy. The analysis is carried out bycomparing the exact form of the free energy and taking the second variation of thefree energy. When the ratio of the outside radius to the inside one exceeds a certainvalue, the pure splay or the pure bend configuration becomes unstable to infinitesmalperturbations. This value depends on the elastic constants and an external magneticfield. Whole results are derived by analytic calculation.
