Elastic constants C.., C.., C.. and C.., and dielectric susceptibilities 7,.. and 7,.. inLiNbO, were determined over the temperature range from 300 to above 1030 K. Theelastic-constant difference between constant polarization and constant field C'; - C'j,and the inverse-susceptibility difference between constant strain and constant stress( '7,:) ' - ( zf) ' are interpreted in terms of both electrostrictive and higher-order in-teraction between strain and polarization. The results for X.. indicate that LiNbO,undergoes nearly second-order phase transition at T.= 1410 K. Above T., z.. showeddispersion in the frequency range between 1 ancl 13 MHz. A comparison of theseresults with soft-mode frequency implies that the soft mode couples with a low fre-quency relaxation process near T..
