An injected-ion drift tube mass spectrometer, whose drift tttbe can be cooled withliquid nitrogen, was developed for studying the mobilities of ic>ns in low-temperaturegases. The mobilities of Kr" in Kr were measured at 88 K with this apparatus as afunction of the reduced field E/N ranging from 30 to 280 Td. It was found that theKr" ions have four distinct mobilities in the E/187 range below about 70 Td. Thesemobilities were identified as being associated with Kr" ions in the four different elec-tronic states, 'P., 'P., 'P. and 'D..
