Second harmonic :eneration (SHG) in atomic Li vapor is studied when the2".S'.,.-3".5.,. two-photon transition is resonantly excited. This is an SHG in amedium with inversion svmmetrv, with no externall>' arr>tied electric or magneticfield, and with no ar>r>arent multir>ole moments associated with the resonantexcitation. The SH rolarization is found to be r>arallel to the intensitv nradientof the incident laser beam when a cylindrical lens focusing is applied. Themechanism of this highly forbidden SHG is explained by the radial electric fieldinduced bv free exransion of r:>hoto-electrons around the laser beam axis.
