A theoretical investisation is made on the linear, sr>atial stabilitv of the develop..ing flow in a two-dimensional channel. The velocity profile of the developingflow region is obtained using Bodoia and Osterle's finite difference method andits stability' is investisated assuminm that the flow is anrroximatel>r r>arallel ateach axial r>osition. Amonm the four methods used for dealinz with the einenvalueproblem, it is found that the integration of the momentum and continuity equa..tions separately while applying selectively the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalizationprocedure provides the most efficiertt and accurate method. The critical Reynolds number, frequency, and wavenumber decrease withincreasing axial distance from the entrance and approach asymptotically thecorresponding values for the fully developed flow. The present results give con-siderably lower critical Reynolds numbers than those for the Sparrow profile inthe near entrance region but agree well with the latter in the farther downstreamregion.
