Magnetic Properties of Single Crystal Chalcogenide Spinels; CuCr_2X_3Y (X=S, Se and Te, Y=C1, Br and I) System

The new compounds CuCr_2S_3I and CuCr_2Te_3Br have been prepared in powder form. Single crystals of CuCr_2S_3Cl, CuCr_2S_3Br, CuCr_2Se_3Cl, CuCr_2Se_3Br, and CuCr_2Te_3I have been also grown. The magnetic properties of these compounds have been studied. Among these compounds, only the magnetic moment of CuCr_2Se_3Br (5.54 _μB/mole) is higher than that of CuCr_2X_4 system (5 μ_B/mole). The magnetic moment of CuCr_2Se_3Cl and CuCr_2Te_3I is very close to 5 μ_B/mole, while the sulfides CuCr_2S_3Y exhibit more complicated magnetic properties. The electrical resistivity of the single crystal CuCr_2Se_3Br shows a semiconductive behavior.
